The population of Russia in 2013 – 143 million people, the area – 17,098,246 km ². Russia is ranked the first in the world in terms of Area and the ninth largest in terms of Population.

The Capital is Moscow. Official language is Russian.

Russia is a mixed republic with federative structure. In May 2012 Vladimir Putin became the President of the Russian Federation. The Prime Minister is Dmitry Medvedev.

According to the Constitution of the Russian Federation Russia has 83 subjects, 55 of which are referred to as Regions, 21 – Republics, 2 – Cities of Federal Statute, 4 – Autonomous Districts and 1 Autonomous Region.

Russia borders with eighteen countries (the largest indicator in the world), including two countries partially recognized. The border by land is with the following countries: Norway, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Belarus, Ukraine , Abkhazia , Georgia, South Ossetia , Azerbaijan , Kazakhstan, China , Mongolia, North Korea.

Russia is known for its ethno-cultural diversity. The majority of the population (about 75 %) are Orthodox Christians, making Russia the country with the largest Orthodox population in the world.

According to the World Bank the GDP PPP for 2012 was $ 3.380 trillion ($ 23,549 per person). Currency – Russian Ruble (average rate has varied between 29 and 35 rubles per 1 U.S. dollar).

After the collapse of the USSR in late 1991 the Russian Federation has been recognized by the international community as the successor state of the USSR and took its seat in the UN Security Council. Russia is a member of international organizations such as the UN, CIS, EurAsEC, CAC, CSTO, SCO, APEC, BRICS and others.
